Capcom Removes Enigma DRM from Resident Evil 4 Remake on PC
Mar 3, 2026 · VaultGames Editorial · Resident Evil 4 (2023)
Capcom reversed course on the PC version of Resident Evil 4 Remake in March 2026, removing the Enigma Protector DRM it had introduced a month earlier. The February 2026 update had quietly swapped the game's long-standing Denuvo anti-tamper software for Enigma Protector.
Players quickly reported stutters and frame rate drops, and Digital Foundry's analysis confirmed a significant drop in CPU throughput in some scenarios compared with the Denuvo build. Steam reviews showed a visible spike in negative feedback, and community reports indicated the change broke compatibility with many existing mods.
On 3 March 2026 Capcom deployed an update that removed Enigma Protector entirely. As of that point the game carried no third-party DRM listing on Steam. The same DRM swap had previously been applied to other Capcom back-catalogue titles, and the episode renewed debate over adding new anti-tamper software to games players had already bought.
