About This Game

Super Mario Bros. 3 is the NES platformer that defined what a sequel could be. Bowser's seven Koopalings have stolen the magic wands of the Mushroom World's kings and turned them into animals; Mario and Luigi set out across eight themed worlds to take the wands back and rescue Princess Toadstool.

What separates it from its predecessor is the world map: for the first time you choose your route, visit Toad Houses for items, and play optional mini-games. The power-up roster is the richest on the NES - the Super Leaf turns Mario into Raccoon Mario and lets him fly after a running start, the Tanooki Suit adds a stone statue transformation, the Frog Suit dominates water stages, and Kuribo's Shoe lets you stomp on spiked enemies. Airship stages, fortress stages and the Boom-Boom mini-bosses give the whole adventure a sense of escalation that few 8-bit games matched.

  • Iconic power-ups: Super Leaf, Tanooki Suit, Frog Suit, Hammer Suit and Kuribo's Shoe
  • Overworld map with branching routes, Toad Houses and mini-games
  • Eight worlds with distinct themes plus airship and fortress stages
  • Two-player alternating play with a Mario Bros.-style battle mini-game

Cheats & Secrets

Warp Whistle (World 1-3)Access to the Warp Zone

Finish World 1-3 with at least 44 coins worth of score, then duck behind the white curtain in the background to drop into a hidden room holding the first Warp Whistle.

Warp Whistle (World 1 Fortress)Access to the Warp Zone

In the first fortress, fly up and over the ceiling with Raccoon Mario near the end to reach a secret chamber with the second Whistle. A third is dropped by a Hammer Brother on the world map after a set number of turns.

P-WingPermanent flight for one stage

Use a P-Wing from your inventory before entering a stage: the Racoon meter starts permanently full, letting you fly across the entire level without touching the ground.

Tips & Strategy

Run before you fly

The Raccoon tail meter only fills while you hold B and keep moving. Sprint for at least three seconds, then jump - the longer you charge, the higher the flight.

Keep your inventory stocked

Toad Houses respawn items after you clear stages and mini-games. Farming them early gives you spare P-Wings and Clouds, which make the later worlds far less punishing.

Lean on the Frog Suit underwater

Water stages are the hardest in the game because of the swim physics. The Frog Suit turns them into the easiest - you swim in a straight line and can jump out of water freely.

Airship stages end with the wand anchor

Every airship stage ends with a door at the back. Rush the Boom-Boom fight, then hit the anchor block behind it to drop the whole ship and get the king his wand back.
