About This Game
River City Ransom takes the Kunio-kun brawler formula and drops it into an open city. Instead of marching left to right, you wander River City freely, entering shops to buy food that permanently raises your stats, picking up weapons from the street, and beating down gang members to learn new moves from the books they drop.
It is a brawler with RPG numbers underneath: punch, kick, weapon, throw, agility, defence, willpower and stamina all grow as you eat and fight. Two players can roam together at any time, and because the city is non-linear, the game doubles as an early example of co-op open-world design — you can grind money on weak gangs before taking on the bosses.
- Open, freely explorable city instead of left-to-right stages
- RPG stat growth through shop food and defeated gang bosses
- Learnable special moves from dropped books
- Two-player simultaneous free-roaming co-op

Tips & Strategy
Eat your way to strength early
Food in the shops is the fastest way to raise stats, and several cheap items give outsized bonuses. Grinding a few early gangs purely for money to spend on malls is far more efficient than pushing into harder districts under-levelled.
Buy the books, not the weapons
Weapons break and disappear, but the move books that gang bosses drop teach permanent techniques. Prioritise collecting kick, punch and throw books before spending cash on temporary hardware.
Watch the bar for stamina and willpower
Your stamina stat governs how much punishment you can absorb, while willpower stops you from being knocked down. Both can be raised by food — a character with high defence but low willpower will spend entire fights on the floor.
Co-op: cover different sides in brawls
Enemies surround you constantly. In two-player games, fight back to back: one player takes the incoming side while the other clears behind, and both retreat to a shop screen when health drops rather than trying to finish a losing fight.
