About This Game

The original Mega Man established a formula that survived for decades: pick any of six Robot Masters in any order, beat them, and take their weapon. Each stage teaches you something about the weapon you will earn, and the whole game is a chain of choices - the order you fight in decides how hard the run is.

It is also the hardest of the classic series. There are no energy tanks, no slide, no charge shot, and the Yellow Devil's disappearing-block pattern is still one of the most demanding boss fights on the NES. The Magnet Beam, hidden in Elec Man's stage, is required to finish Dr. Wily's fortress, and its placement is one of the best-known examples of a designer forcing you to explore.

  • Six Robot Masters in any order, each granting a weapon
  • Weapon weakness chain that rewards planning your route
  • Magnet Beam - a required item hidden inside a stage
  • The Yellow Devil, one of the NES's most infamous bosses

Cheats & Secrets

Pause, then press SelectTemporary invincibility

While the game is paused, pressing Select repeatedly makes Mega Man flash; during the flash he cannot be hit. The famous and genuine select-button trick, most often used to survive the Yellow Devil.

Tips & Strategy

Bomb Man first

His weapon, the Hyper Bomb, is strong and his stage is the fairest of the six. Beating him opens a comfortable weapon chain.

Get the Magnet Beam before the fortress

It is in Elec Man's stage behind blocks you break with the Super Arm. Without it you cannot cross Wily's floating-platform sections.

Use the pause trick sparingly

The select-button invincibility makes the Yellow Devil survivable, but relying on it everywhere will not teach you the boss patterns you need later.

Weapon conservation matters

Weapon energy does not refill between stages. Arrive at Wily's fortress with full bars by refilling at the shop-like pickups in each stage.
