About This Game

Oriental Legend (西游释厄传) is the game that made IGS's PGM hardware a household name in Asian arcades. Journey to the West comes to life as a side-scrolling beat 'em up: Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, Tang Seng and Xiao Longnü battle demons across stages drawn straight from the novel, armed with combo attacks and screen-clearing magic items.

Its magic-item system — treasure picked up mid-fight that unleashes massive area attacks — gave the game its strategic layer, and its four-player cabinet support made it the social centerpiece of Chinese arcades for years. The series continued with Oriental Legend Super and the legendary Kuen Mo Ron Wu (群魔乱舞) expansions before culminating in Oriental Legend 2.

  • Five Journey to the West heroes with distinct movesets
  • Magic-item system for devastating screen-clearing attacks
  • Four-player simultaneous co-op on the PGM board

Tips & Strategy

Bank magic items for bosses

Items collected mid-stage clear the screen and chunk bosses, but using them on regular mobs is a waste. Hold at least one item back for every boss door.

Wukong's dash covers the whole screen

Sun Wukong's dashing staff attack travels far and hits everything in its path. Use it to break through crowds rather than fighting them toe-to-toe.

In four-player games, save items for the group

A single screen-clearing item benefits everyone. Agree that whoever holds an item pops it when the team is surrounded — one well-timed item can revive a whole run.

Learn the mob spawn rhythm

Enemies arrive in fixed groups per screen. Hitting the first spawn with a dash as it enters stops the group from surrounding you — the fight is much easier fought in ones and twos.
