About This Game

Golden Axe is Sega's high-fantasy beat 'em up, pitting the barbarian Ax Battler, the amazon Tyris Flare and the dwarf Gilius Thunderhead against Death Adder's legions across Yuria. Swords, magic and the series' signature rideable beasts — including fire-breathing dragons — define its look and feel.

Magic is the strategic heart: potions collected on the field charge your spell meter, and casting it wipes the screen in a spectacle of dragons and lightning — but you are vulnerable while casting. Between-stage bonus rounds let you ride beasts and whack thieves for potions, and the whole package became one of the defining co-op games of the late 80s arcade era.

  • Three fantasy heroes: warrior, amazon and dwarf
  • Potion-charged magic spells with screen-clearing spectacle
  • Rideable beasts including fire-breathing dragons
  • Between-stage thief-bashing bonus rounds

Tips & Strategy

Save the big spell for the last wave

Casting mid-stage wastes your meter on trash mobs. Bank potions into the boss encounter — a full Tyris Flare spell can delete half a boss's health bar.

Knock enemies off ledges

Most stages have edges. A back-throw or a heavy hit near a ledge drops enemies for instant kills, which is much faster than fighting armoured knights toe-to-toe.

Steal the dragon whenever possible

The fire-breathing mounts hit harder than any character. If a rider appears, knock them off and take the beast — then ride it until the stage ends or it is shot out from under you.

Thieves carry potions, not weapons

The little yellow thieves in the bonus rounds drop potions when hit. Learn their routes and smack them early — your magic meter is the real currency of this game.
