The Witcher 3 Beginner Guide โ€” Skills, Gear and Preparation

Oct 2, 2026 ยท VaultGames Editorial ยท The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3's difficulty is deceptive. Equipment stats matter far less than preparation, and the game gives you an enormous toolbox of oils, potions, bombs and signs that most new players ignore entirely. Coating your blade with the right oil adds a flat percentage of damage against that monster type, and applying it before a fight is free. Potions such as Swallow for healing and Thunderbolt for attack power last long enough to cover an entire encounter, and unlike most RPGs there is no real penalty for drinking them โ€” the toxicity system simply caps how many you can stack. Use them constantly.

Geralt has no dedicated block button, so defence means dodging: short rolls for quick repositioning and long rolls for escaping area attacks. Quen is the most forgiving sign for beginners because it absorbs a hit outright, buying you the moment you need to read an unfamiliar enemy. Against groups, Igni and bombs break up formations, while Aard knocks enemies down for a free finisher. Signs cost stamina, not mana, so there is no reason to be stingy with Quen.

On the skill tree, do not spread points across every branch. Pick a lane โ€” fast attacks with light armour, heavy attacks and tanking, or a sign-focused build โ€” and invest deeply, because the best abilities only unlock at higher tier investment, and mutagen synergy multiplies everything you have. Finally, hunt down the Witcher gear scavenger hunts as soon as the level requirement allows; these upgradable sets outperform almost every random drop and stay useful for dozens of hours.
