RDR2 Horses Guide — Where to Find the Best Mounts Early
Oct 2, 2026 · VaultGames Editorial · Red Dead Redemption 2
Horse quality in Red Dead Redemption 2 comes down to three numbers: speed, acceleration and stamina. The white Arabian is the easiest elite mount to obtain, and you can tame it in the wild near the frozen lake in the far north-west of the map, well before you can afford anything comparable from a stable. Bring a warm coat, approach slowly, and calm the horse when it rears. Tamed horses bond with you just like purchased ones, so there is no downside beyond the trip.
Bonding is a hidden progression system worth understanding. Feeding, brushing and calming your horse raises its bond level, and each level adds health and stamina, unlocks new handling tricks, and improves how quickly it responds under pressure. Set the horse to follow and it will never truly be lost; if it dies, you can revive it with a horse reviver, so keep one in your satchel. Saddles and stirrups bought from any stable are a direct, permanent buff to speed and stamina drain — upgrading the stirrups on a starter horse is often cheaper than buying a new one.
Later, stables in the larger towns stock Turkomans and Missouri Fox Trotters, both excellent all-rounders with strong stamina for long journeys. War horses such as the Ardennes offer more health and a calmer temperament around gunfire, which matters more than raw speed if you spend your time hunting. Match the horse to the job, and always feed it after a hard ride.
