Red Dead Redemption 2 Beginner Guide โ€” Cores, Money and Honour

Oct 2, 2026 ยท VaultGames Editorial ยท Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 hides its survival systems in plain sight. Arthur has three cores โ€” health, stamina and Dead Eye โ€” and each one drains over time. A depleted core does not just slow regeneration; it lowers the ceiling of the bar above it. Eat regularly, sleep at camp, and take a tonic before a long ride, because arriving at a shootout exhausted is the fastest way to die in a game that already has a slow, deliberate control scheme. Coat, horse and weapon condition all feed into the same idea: preparation beats reaction.

Money accumulates slowly if you only follow the story, so make a habit of looting bodies, selling valuables at fences rather than general stores, and using the camp ledger to upgrade your satchel and lodgings. Bounty hunters are the flip side of the coin โ€” committing crimes in a region raises a bounty there, and they will ambush you on the road. Pay off small bounties when you can, or at least avoid the region until you do.

Honour changes far more than dialogue. High honour gives better shop prices and access to certain story beats, while low honour opens a different path through the same missions. Neither is wrong, but decide early, because flip-flopping wastes the stat. Finally, upgrade your camp early โ€” Pearson's crafting unlocks a larger satchel only if you bring him perfect pelts, and the difference between a small and large satchel is measured in dozens of quality-of-life hours.
