Hogwarts Legacy Beginner Guide โ€” Spells, Talents and Combos

Oct 2, 2026 ยท VaultGames Editorial ยท Hogwarts Legacy

Combat in Hogwarts Legacy looks like a free-for-all but is really a matching game. Enemy shields are colour-coded: red shields break to damage spells, purple to control spells, yellow to force spells. Hitting the wrong colour does almost nothing, which is why so many new players feel underpowered โ€” they are casting whichever spell is off cooldown instead of the one the target is weak to. Assign at least one spell of each colour to your two spell sets and learn which enemies carry which shield.

The defensive layer matters just as much. Protego blocks reduced damage, but a Protego timed to the exact moment of impact becomes a perfect block and fires back a Stupefy that staggers the attacker. From there, the pattern is simple: perfect block, Stupefy, then a spell of the enemy's weakness colour, then a basic cast chain. Levioso lifts an enemy helplessly into the air, Accio drags them into your range, and Incendio punishes anyone left standing. Master that loop and even large ambushes become routine.

Outside combat, spend talent points deliberately โ€” the tree rewards specialisation, and the augmentations that add extra effects to your favourite spells are worth more than scattering points across everything. When exploring, pick up every chest and complete side quests, because gear drops are your only route to better stats, and the Room of Requirement's loom lets you add traits that push a build from adequate to absurd.
