GTA V Story Mode Guide — Turning the Stock Market Into Millions

Oct 2, 2026 · VaultGames Editorial · Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced

Story mode's economy has one enormous exploit, and it is not an exploit in the cheating sense: it is the designed interaction between Lester's assassination missions and the in-game stock market. The pattern is always the same — you are told which company is about to be targeted, you invest with the character who has the most cash before starting the mission, the stock moves dramatically in a predictable direction, and you sell afterwards. Two exchanges exist, one tied to the fictional market that responds to story events and one to the real-life-style index, and the mission briefings tell you which is affected.

The critical mistake is doing these missions early. They are available as soon as Lester offers them, but the payouts scale with how much money you have invested, and early in the game you are broke. Save all but the first one — which serves as a tutorial — until after the final heist, when all three characters are wealthy, then run them back to back with maximum investment each time. The compounding effect turns a few hundred thousand dollars into tens of millions.

Beyond the market, property purchases provide steady passive income once the campaign is over, and the collectible and side activities scattered across the map pay out modest but reliable sums. Neither comes close to the assassination strategy, though, so plan your playthrough around it: play normally, finish the story, then get rich.
