About This Game

The Goonies II is one of the strangest games on the NES: half a side-scrolling platformer, half a first-person point-and-click adventure. Mikey has to rescue the other Goonies plus a mermaid called Annie, and the game switches view entirely depending on which room you walk into.

The side-scrolling sections are standard Konami platforming with punching, a yo-yo and bombs, plus the series' famous hidden passages - punching or bombing a wall reveals a door into a building. Inside those buildings the game becomes first person: you move between static rooms, pick up items, use them on the environment, and free the trapped Goonies one at a time. Because a lot of progress requires the right item in the right room, and because the map is large and deliberately unmapped, it plays like a puzzle box. Its soundtrack is one of Konami's best on the console.

  • Two interleaved play styles - side-scrolling platforming and first-person room exploration
  • Hidden doors revealed by punching or bombing specific walls
  • Item-based first-person puzzles required to free each Goonie
  • Famously unmarked map that rewards note-taking

Tips & Strategy

Punch every suspicious wall

Doors into the first-person buildings are hidden in plain walls. The visual tell is a slightly different block pattern - probe it with your fist.

Keep a written item list

The first-person sections require specific items and never tell you which. Writing down what each room contains saves hours of backtracking.

Bombs open more than passages

Some items and doors only appear after a bomb, and a few walls need two hits. If a passage refuses to open, try again with a bomb.

The mermaid is the last step

Annie is only freed after the rest. Clearing the buildings in order avoids carrying items you cannot use yet.
