About This Game

Robotron: 2084 is the most intense game of the golden age, full stop. The year is 2084 and the Robotrons have decided humans are inefficient; you are the last human agent with a gun, dropped into arenas where dozens of enemies converge from every edge simultaneously and the screen is a five-second countdown to contact at all times.

Its innovation is the control scheme that named a genre: two joysticks, one to move, one to shoot, letting you run one way and fire the opposite direction - the twin-stick shooter exists because of this cabinet. The enemy design is a geometry lesson: grunts swarm in lines, tanks fire bouncing shells, spheroids spawn spinners, and brain robots home in while holding human prisoners. Rescuing the last human family (Mommy, Daddy, Mikey) is worth thousands of points, which creates the eternal Robotron dilemma - die trying to save them or live to fight the swarm. Eugen Jarvis and Larry DeMar designed it, and it is still the benchmark for wave shooters: no power-ups, no patterns to camp, just speed and geometry.

  • The original dual-joystick cabinet: move and shoot independently
  • Enemy types built on distinct geometry - swarms, bounces, homing
  • The last human family as a high-value rescue decision
  • No power-ups or safe spots - pure reflex and spatial planning

Tips & Strategy

Keep moving in circles, not lines

The arena has no cover. Circling the edge keeps enemies behind your fire lane; straight runs cross incoming swarms.

Fire backward while retreating

That is what the second stick is for. The moment you stop shooting to run, you are already dead.

Save the family when it is on your path

Mikey and parents score hugely, but detours get you surrounded. Collect the humans your route touches, not the ones that cost you the map.

Learn the tank shell bounce

Tanks fire shots that ricochet off walls. Counting one bounce - not two - is the dodge window you can actually use.
